INTRODUCTION
Tasmania is an island at the bottom of Australia. It is a unique and mysterious place with a rich history of brutality, heartache and sorrow. But it is a beautiful place as well. The South West has some of the most untouched wilderness in the world. There is a 1200 metre tall mountain that overlooks the capital city, Hobart. Tasmania is known for the Tassie Devil and the extinct Tasmanian Tiger, there is a history of convicts, torture, mining and a horrific massacre at Port Arthur. The coasts are rugged but picturesque, and the bushwalking is equally as amazing as the beaches. The climate is mild, but the people, and the food, and the wine are up there with the best in the world.
Tasmania is isolated from mainland Australia but only by an hour if you fly. This isolation has bred many talented bands. Some which have stayed on the island, some which have toured nationally, and the likes of Psycroptic that have made it overseas with great success. We also have the intriguing Striborg and the up and coming Permafog, and there are many, many others in between.
This archive is a passion project that will delve into every extreme metal band that is worthy of my time, and there are many. The list is long and broad, and covers decades of extreme southern metal. From Southern Tasmania with Ruins to Burnie with the lads from Intense Hammer Rage and Pulverised Cranial Matter. From M.S.I to GAPE to Thrall to Domination Campaign, it is a wild and diverse scene in Tasmania, and it is all worth learning and listening to.
I hope you enjoy and check out a few of these and come here as the place to read about what I think is the best little scene in Australia, and up there in the world.
